Abstract
As it became increasingly well known that the causes of diseases exist beyond individual levels, attention on health standards has increased steadily. Research on interregional health inequalities in Korea has been actively conducted, but the research on changes over time in the magnitude of these inequalities is relatively weak compared to that in other countries. This study aimed to determine the existence and magnitude of regional health inequalities during the period of 2000-2011. Life expectancy at birth was calculated using Statistics Korea¡¯s mid-year population data. This study tried to identify health disparities with area deprivation using the Composite Deprivation Index (CDI) and concentration index. However, the CDI was reconstructed it with adding ¡®education¡¯ domain for grouping the deprivation level. In addition, the concentration indices of regional life expectancy for the years 2000, 2005, and 2010 were calculated and compared. The results of this study showed that the districts recorded high level of life expectancy over 12 years, while counties recorded low level and the rate of increase was greatest in the cities. Health disparities by region and gender showed almost no changes, but maintained this relative differences without any decrease. Health disparity by the quintile deprivation level was greatest in cities and smallest in counties. This study reaffirmed the link between the area deprivation level and health because the lower the area deprivation, the higher the life expectancy. Even though the regional inequalities in life expectancy were not widened compared to previous studies, the differences in life expectancy within the area types still existed.
